Russian Secret Police files, recently discovered, reveal the true nature of Rasputin's powers, as told to an undercover agent hours before his assassination. Rasputin was a member of a secretive religious cult known as the Khlysty, or "People of God" forced underground by centuries of government persecution, but growing in numbers.

After the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 the Khlysty were thought to have been eradicated. But in fact they survived in the remotest villages of the Siberian taiga.
